Here we are, sitting on an empty white beach in Goa. All excited and with lots of big ideas... What a difference this makes from the grey skies of London.
Three months ago, we hatched a plan intended to change our lives forever. The time had finally come to move on to something bigger and more challenging, but also more satisfying and purposeful. We were very excited, convinced that if we could make it work, it would turn out to be one of the most fulfilling things we would have ever done.
Despite enjoying good careers, we both felt a sense of unease and frustration with our work. This obviously extended to our day to day lives. Although it was clear to us that this could be due to a number of reasons – hitting thirty; the constraints of working in a big organisation; lacking a real sense of purpose in our work, to name just a few – the urge to do something about it had become too great.
What if we could set up our own company, to put into practice what we had learned along the way? Would it be possible to free ourselves from the constraints of working for someone else, be successful and yet pave our own way and create something meaningful?
So here we are: sitting in front of the Arabian Sea and facing possibly the biggest challenge of our lives. Although we’ve agreed in general terms what we need to do, we know we have a mountain of work ahead of us.
We’re guessing that the more we learn about our project, the more unanswered questions will emerge. Despite our enthusiasm, we’re realistic enough to recognise that if something looks too good to be true, there is usually a good reason for it.
Next week, one of us will resign from his job in finance to join the other one working full-time on the project. That’s why we decided to take a week off: to relax as much as possible before the challenges ahead. And so we thought: what better time to start writing a blog?
We came to the conclusion that it would be both nice and interesting (hopefully even useful) to have platform to share our experiences with others. Our Startup emerged out of a desire to communicate and initiate a dialogue with like-minded people, fellow entrepreneurs, and really anybody whose interested. As we venture into the unknown, Our Startup will tell the story of our personal journeys into social entrepreneurship. Post by post, we’ll share our thoughts, highs and lows, our lessons learned, tips and how to's, as well as our our vision of business. We will also use this blog to ask for your advice, to help us make better decisions along the way. We hope you enjoy the journey! |
